In the era when Euler did mathematics the level of “heuristicity” of papers was much higher than today. Many proofs and concepts were proven insufficient or just mislead. However, most of the mathematical concepts used today stem from those heuristic investigations. It is about looking beyond the known and to reach for the unexplained, the curious. In my opinion this is the true goal of mathematics.
In the course of this I have here created a new form of open science blog on applied mathematics. As a break from my ordinary publication scheme, I shall here publish notes, comments, challenges but most importantly I will publish shorter “mathematical investigations” regarding anything from pure- to applied mathematics. They will be subjected to a public review process. We wish to do as original research as possible, but if anything is partly or fully similar to some other previous work or just plain wrong, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will deal with it as soon as possible.
All Investigations will be under the category Investigations, other entries such as links, challenges or short commentaries will be posted under other categories. Every Investigation will have a short summary on the blogpost along with a link to the corresponding pdf. In addition every investigation will have a definate report number of type MIxxxxxx and will be considered permanent, as to allow for referencing. An example:
J.D.Munkhammar, “A theory of theories”, MI090610-1 (mathematics.wordpress.com)
The investigations will be in a wide range of fields, I hope that everyone will find something interesting there. If anyone has an investigation or open problem or something they want share on this site, feel free to send to me and I’ll have a look at it. You will of course be attributed the entry.

Why mathematical investigations?
Mathematics is the prime tool for investigation of complex problems. When it comes to mathematics and science I believe there is so much more to discover out there. It is about looking beyond the known and to reach for the unexplained, the curious. In my opinion this is the true goal of mathematics.
